Olea capensis : In East Africa, bark decoctions are used as an emetic and anthelmintic, and to treat malaria, venereal diseases, and female sterility; bark ash is applied as a dressing to wounds. In Swaziland, bark decoctions are taken to treat peptic ulcers, and in South Africa, the bark is used for skin lightening.

The fleshy, spongy rhizomes are dug up and may be pounded to a meal and used as a source of starch. The pollen may also be used as a high-protein food. The leaves are used to make hand brooms and are also used to some extent in weaving and thatching.

Of all the many members of this very interesting group of plants, Elegia capensis is one of the most attractive and widely cultivated, both locally and abroad. They are evergreen, clump-forming perennials comprised of multiple, tall stems that can attain a height of 2-3m.

Anchusa capensis has no recorded medicinal uses, but the leaves are edible and are eaten like spinach by the Sesotho people. The flowers are also edible, and can be added to salads or desserts.
