Senna alata is an important medicinal tree, as well as an ornamental flowering plant in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae. It also known as emperor's candlesticks.

Evergreen shrub 3-5 m tall and 3 m wide. Leaves pinnate, up to 75 cm long. Leaflets in 7-14 pairs, oblong to obovate, 8-20 cm long and 3-10 cm wide.

Senna alata, commonly called empress candle plant or candle bush, is so named because the erect flower spikes when in bud resemble yellow candles.
