Description:
Glabrous rhizomatous sedge; rhizome short, woody, horizontal, sympodial with wiry rootlets; stem to 40 cm high, nodose at base. Leaves usually near base of the culms, rather numerous, narrowly linear with filiform tips, shorter than stems, 2-3 mm wide; sheaths numerous, brown, striate, persistent. Inflorescence umbellate heads ;bracts usually 2, up to 6 cm long, unequal, not dilated at the base, leaf-like. Spikelets 3-12 in a head 15-18 x 5-6 mm, oblong-elliptic, compressed, 20-40-flowered, pale, sometimes almost white; rachilla not winged. Glumes 5 x 1.5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, compressed; keel produced into a very short micro; margins whitish or whitish-brown, multistriate, with narrow, hyaline margins. Stamens 3; filaments long, persistent; anther exserted, linear. Style 1.5 mm long; stigma 3, rather shorter than the style. Achene 2 mm long, obovoid, triquetrous, dark-brown.
