I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

This is a monotypic epiphytic genus from Brazil that is closely allied to Oncidium, with compressed, oblong pseudobulbs with two coriaceous leaves and an inflorescence that arises from the side of a mature pseudobulb.

According to Carl Luer. There are 19 or so dwarf miniature cool to cold growing epiphytes found from Central America south to Venezuela then to Peru and Brazil that have short ramicauls, solitary flowers that emerge laterally from the ramicauls without an annulus, and a column that is well developed carring a hooded ventral anther and stigma, the fat column foot is set into a concavity at the base of the lip forming a ball and socket joint allowing the lip to move, four equally sized pollina are present which distinguish it from Pleurothallis which has two. This genus can be grown with the same culture as Masdevallia.

There are 16 to 18, small to medium sized epiphytes or lithophytes in this Central American genus that grow in warm to cool conditions, and need a bright rest in winter as they drop their leaves. Watering and fertilizer should be resumed after the new growth appears in the spring. This genus is characterized by having thick roots, with slender, cane-like, fusiform to cylindrical pseudobulbs enveloped by scarious leaf sheaths carrying alternate, linear-lanceolate to broadly ovate, articulated, sessile, soft textured, deciduous leaves and blooms on a terminal, racemose, few to many flowered inflorescence. Best grown mounted on wood branches or tree fern slabs, given a well ventilated and airy space, brightly lit, with high humidity and lots of fertilizer while growing and a definitive rest through the winter months only to resume with the onset of new growth in the spring.

There are 5 species spread throughout the Amazon basin that grow as epiphytes and have clustered, one-noded, ovoid pseudobulbs with 2 to 3 apical, plicate leaves, giving rise to a basal, short, racemose inflorescence that has a few to many, medium sized, showy flowers with generally narrow lateral sepals attached at the end of the column foot and downturned. They have fairly broad petals, a trilobed lip with erect lateral lobes, a downturned apical lobe, a wingless column with four pollina and a short, broad stipe. This genus and Bifrenaria can be grown in the same manner.

There are nine species in this genus from Ecuador and Peru that were segregated from Chondrorhyncha and Stenia or replaced Ackermania. Characterized by no pseudobulbs, the foliaceous distichous leaf bases froming a pendant, fan-like orchid, the leaves lightly plicate, single flowered axillary inflorescence carrying resupinate flowers with a deeply tubular, saccate lip that is truncate apically and has a flattened apicule. The lip sides do not surround the column and it carries a shallow callus. There are 4, flattened, superposed pollina attached to a short stipe which is attached to the broad, flattened viscidium.

There are 11 species in this epiphytic monopodial genus restricted to Indo-China and Malesia characterized by the very short, monopodial stem carrying fleshy, linear leaves and has short, racemose, axillary inflorescence with 3 to 6 short-lived, small flowers with the lateral sepals attached to the column base, a sessile lip that is narrowly but firmly attached to the column foot at right angles and is concave, fleshy, bilobed or not, raising in right angles to the base and parellel to or half embracing the straight column that has a short foot at angles to itself There are 2 globular to ovoid, grooved or porate pollina with strap shaped stipes and a small viscidium.

There are 21 or so small to medium sized epiphytes or often terrestrials that have four cornered pseudobulbs with erect, coriaceous, plicate leaves that have an erect, racemose inflorescence arising from the base of an adult pseudobulb that carries up to five flowers which are often fragrant. The lip of the flower is three or four lobed and has a single, low, elongate callus without keels. It has four pollina which are hard, attached to a short, wide stipe on a flattened viscidium. They are warm to cool growing plants that require partial shade and humid, well watered and fertilized conditions while growing and less after the pseudobulbs are mature.

The 36 members of this genus are almost always terrestrials found on grassland hillsides from sea level to 2700 meters and are spread from Florida south to Brazil growing in well draining soil with fertilizer and ample water while growing and a tapering off to a trickle through the winter months. They are distinguished by a basal corm carrying apical, thin strongly veined leaves with a basal inflorescence arising from the side of the corm, carrying flowers with the anther, operculate on the apex of the column and having 8 soft and mealy pollina.

Nine species make up this genus which occurs in eastern Asia, Taiwan and adjacent islands, as terrestrials, with plicate leaves and a distinct corm at the base of the stem. The flowers are showy and are on a terminal, racemose, few flowered inflorescence carrying resupinate flowers with subequal, narrow, elongate sepals and petals; a lip that is hinged to the base of the column, neither saccate nor spurred, trilobed apically with a lamellate, dentate disc. The long, incurved, footless column has a ligulose rostellum that conspicuously covers the stigma. There are 8, clavate, laterally flattened, of different sizes and shape pollina with intralocular caudicles.

There are 76 species spread throughout tropical America in this terrestrial and epiphytic genus of sub-viney orchids that often occur at elevations of 1000 to 3000 meters on embankments and low down on tree trunks in cloud forests. The genus is characterized by no pseudobulbs, an elongate, creeping rhizome, short ramicauls with glabrous sheaths and a single glabrous leaf, the presence of a joint between the pedicel and the ovary, similar petals that are smaller than the dorsal sepal and synsepal and the 6 to 8 hard pollina.

This is a small genus of 7 species found in the Andes from Venezuela to Ecuador and grows cool to cold as a small epiphyte with stout ascending rhizomes covered with papery sheaths giving rise to compressed, narrowly oblong-ovate pseudobulbs carrying 1-2, fleshy leaves. The flowers have inflated bracts that almost cover the flowers and the lip is saccate at the base with two hard pollina attached to a stipe and viscidium. The flowers arise on a inflorescence that have all the flowers crowded toward the apex and arise individually out of the compressed bracts with up to 5 open at a time much like Thrixspermum.
Kew now puts all these species within Brassia due to genetic similarities but I feel that they should remain separate as they are well distinguished by sight.

There are about 35 species in this terrestrial genus found mostly in Africa and Madagascar but in tropical Asia as well. Closely related to to the European genera Orchis and Dactylorhiza and very close to Habenaria but it has floral bracts that are longer than the flowers. They are characterized by having fusiform or ellipsoid roots, a leafy stem carrying numerous overlapping, glabrous or pubescent leaves and gives rise to a terminal, many flowered inflorescence and can be grown like the genus Phaius. It has free sepals with the petals adnate to the column base, the lip is broadly obcordate to flabelliform, has an entire to bilobulate apex with a sinus in between the lobes or a central apiculum. The slightly curved, clavate to broadly conical spur is shorter than the lip. There are 2 granular pollina with short caudicles and a naked viscidia.

The eighteen, epiphytic and sometimes lithophytic species of Brassavola are spread throughout the tropical lowland Americas, are most heavily fragrant at night and many have a citrus smell. They have a single, apical, subterete leaf on a pencil-like pseudobulb and bloom with a single or a raceme of a few large flowers with elongate narrow sepals and petals and the base of the lip embracing at least a portion of the column which carries 12, sometimes eight unequal pollina occuring as a rule in spring, summer and fall. They are allied with the Cattleyas and are used extensively in hybridizing. They are the "B" in BLC in many orchids that are commonly grown. There are 29 species of Brassia spread throughout tropical America at altitudes below 1500 meters. The genus was described by Robert Brown in 1813 using Brassia maculata as the type species. They are commonly called 'The Spider Orchid' because of the flowers unique shape. It has also been discovered that this genus is extensively pollinated by female wasps [Pepsis and Campsomeris genera] that sting at the column attempting to pull it away to consume it, constantly stinging away at the lip, and in their struggle pick up the pollina on their head. They then rove to another flower where the pollina is stripped from their head by the bottom of the column where it enters the stigma. The genus is characterized by conspicuous pseudobulbs with one or two leaves at the apex, and distichious leaf-like sheaths encompassing the base and from these arise the lateral inflorescence that generally do not branch and have small inconspicuous floral bracts. The callus of the flower located at the base of the lip generally consists of two parellel lamellae which may become an apical tooth which can be separated or united to the lamella. The shape and form of this callus is the major distinguishing feature between each of the species. Generally the lip is smooth but in a few cases has warts and a bumpy surface, it is also free from the column and has no spur at the back. The there is no column foot and it is short with 2 fleshy, side lobes at oppposing sides at the base which also surrounds the base of the callus. The anther is at the apex of the column and carries two hard pollina attached to a rectangular stipe. They do well mounted on tree fern or potted with a well draining medium, and grown in intermediate conditions.

There are 30 species in this terrestrial or occasional epiphytic genus occuring in southeastern Asia, Australia and the Philippines. It is readily distinguished by having cane-like, slender stems, numerous, oblong to lanceolate leaves held horizontally or laterally compressed in one plane with the stem and blooms on a terminal or lateral, distichously arranged inflorescence carrying successively opening, ephemeral flowers with sessile pollina.
This genus can be grown like Sobralia but with less direct sun and slightly warmer temperatures in the winter.

A genus of 2 species and one natural hybrid found in Jamaica and Cuba. It is typified with flattened ovoid closely packed pseudobulbs with 2 apical stiff leaves. The inflorescence arises from the apex of the pseudobulb and the flowers open sequentially over months. They like hot to warm even conditions with bright light. They are allied to the Cattleya and are used often in breeding, such as the intergeneric cross Cattletonia. I find they are happiest mounted on tree branches and they can be affected easily by scale so occasional spraying with an insecticide is called for.

There are 8 species in this terrestrial genus segregated from Disa that occur in Africa and Madagascar. The genus is characterized by the pubescent to wooly tubers giving rise to glabrous, brown sheathing stem carrying 1 to a few, cauline, ovate to linear leaves that blooms on a terminal, erect, dense head like cluster or lax to dense racemose, rarely single flowered inflroescnece with shorter to longer than the ovary, acuminate, green, erect bracts and carrying white, pink or mauve flowers that are often dark spotted
