Low-growing, spreading (to 24") perennial with snapdragon-like flowers and velvety leaves. I was really taken with this plant when I saw it growing in a rock wall at Chanticleer Garden, a little south of our first garden in Pennsylvania. Hardiness in our zone-6 garden was uncertain though – some sources rate it hardy only to zone 7. Although we lost a good many through the years, one plant in our open rock garden made it through the rather cold winter of 2015, and bloomed the following May. It was about time I saw some flowers, because I was getting discouraged with its disappearance acts. And although it is also grown as an annual, it doesn't bloom in its first year from seed in my experience.
