Some authors have suggested that Rumex nepalensis occuring in Japan was introduced from China in ancient era and had been cultivated in very limmited area in Japan.
Rumex nepalensis occuring in Japan is protected by some national and lical laws and regulations as a threatend plant. The legislation was based on a conception that the species has been a local variety of Rumex nepalensis and endemic to Japan. However, if the plant is not endemic to Japan then legal validity of such a legislation (especially penal provisions) may be in doubt.
