Bignonia capreolata (crossvine)

crossvine (1 gallon)

Crossvine is a climbing, woody vine with showy orange-red trumpet-shaped flowers that resemble the flowers of trumpet creeper. Its beautiful tubular flowers with yellow throats bloom in May and June and attract hummingbirds. The waxy leaves are semi-evergreen, turning a handsome reddish-purple in the winter. The common name refers to the cross-shaped pattern revealed when the stem is cut. This woody vine is a vigorous (aggressive to some) plant can quickly cover a structure, and grow to 36-50'. It also spreads below ground through runners. Training to avoid crowding of stems will aid in the formation of flower shoots. Plant in full sun to part shade in medium moisture. Deer will browse it in winter.

Crossvine is native to central and southern U.S. Attracts hummingbirds. Provdes an early nectar source for butterflies.
