Description

Rhizome stout, erect, scaly; scales c. 1.5 cm long, narrow, brown, hairy. Fronds to 2 m long. Stipes tufted, to 70 cm long, green when living, glabrous except near the base, with basal scales similar to those of the rhizome. Lamina 1-pinnate-pinnatifid, to c. 100 cm long; pinnae 25–40 cm long, 3–4 cm wide, thin, closely placed, lobed almost to costa; lobes ±at right-angles to costa, linear, 3–4 mm wide, separated by almost their own width; veins 14–20 pairs; basal acroscopic veins ending beside the short sinus membranes; basiscopic veins passing to the margin above the base of a sinus; lower surface of costae and costules with slender acicular hairs up to 1 mm long; lower surface of costules and veins bearing many small pale yellow glands; hairs between veins short, erect and acicular or small and capitate. Sori supramedial, c. 0.6 mm diam., in depressions in the lamina (forming convexities on the upper surface); indusium thin, with a variable fringe of short yellow capitate hairs.

Distribution

Wet Tropics of NE Queensland between Daintree and Russel Rivers. Also scattered across Pacific Islands, Malesia and Asia.

Habit and habitat

Terrestrial in mesic vine forest in lower montane river valleys.

Natural history

The fronds have a spicy aroma when crushed.
