This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Hermann Wilhelm Rudolf Marloth in 1931. It is found in western South Africa, growing in a sandy, clayish or grave soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are white with delicate pink markings.

The genera name from Greek gethyon, 'bulb'. The species name from Latin; lanuginous; 'covered with down or fine soft hair' for the leaves.

This is a winter-grower.
