This member of the Sterculiaceae*
family was given this mane by A. Terracino in 1897. It is found in Queensland, north-eastern Australia, growing in a well drained soil with some water
and lots of sun. The stem can grow to 70 centimetres in diameter,
and it looses it's swollen form by age, where it will reach eight to
25
meters height. The flowers are white to slightly dark crème coloured.
The genera name from Greek, brachys, short and chiton, a
tunic, a reference to the coating on the seed.
The species name means
'southern'.
