This member of the Cucurbitaceae
family was given this name by Adrianus Dirk Jacob Meeuse in 1962. It
is found in the forests and bushes of southern Africa and
Madagascar, growing in a well drained but slightly rich soil with
some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 25 centimetres, the
vines up to two metres. The small flowers are greenish yellow.
The genera name from Latin; corallum; 'coral' and Greek;
karpos; 'fruit' for the red fruits. The species is named after
J. Thomas Baines, 1820-1875, an English artist and explorer in South
Africa. |
