This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Anna Amelia Obermeyer in 1980. It is from southern Namibia and western South Africa, growing in well drained soil, during the winter. Some water and lots of sun. The caudex grows to ten centimetres, the entire plant reaches 20 centimetres. The flowers are white.

The genera name from Greek gethyon, 'bulb'. The species after the area it is found in: Namaqua desert.

This is a winter grower.
