The family Fabaceae was earlier called Papilionoideae. The name Papilionoideae is due to the presence of papilionaceous corolla. The papilionaceous corolla consists of five petals. One large standard petal which is completely outside and overlaps the two lateral wing petals. These in turn overlap the two small keel petals. Keel petals are united and enclose the reproductive parts of the flower. Papilionoideae is now called Fabaceae due to the genus “Faba” (Faba, in Latin means ‘bean’, which corresponds to leguminous plants).
