Etymology of Canthium:
From the Malabar name canti for a species of this genus. ‘Turkey-berry’ tree.
Etymology of mundianum:
Johannes Ludwig Leopold Mund (1791-1831), pharmacist, botanical collector and later land surveyor. He was sent to the Cape as an official plant collector by the Prussian government. He visited Knysna and Plettenburg Bay east as far as Uitenhage.

Shrub or tree to 5 m. Leaves opposite, broadly elliptic to ovate, softly hairy, usually large. Flowers several in axillary cymes, greenish cream, calyx lobes reduced to a rim. Sept.--Nov. Coastal forest margins, SW, AP, LB, SE (Cape Peninsula to Zimbabwe).
