Etymology of Gethyllis:
Possibly Gk. getheo = I rejoice; ullus = diminutive, but most sources say from gethyon = a bulb, onion or species of leek. The bulbs of this genus are somewhat similar to those of the leek.

Bulbous geophyte to 15 cm. Leaves dry at flowering, erect, spiralled, glabrous, basal sheaths paired, spotted. Flowers large, white to pink, anthers more than 6. Oct.--Mar. Sandveld, NW (Namaqualand to Clanwilliam).
