Gk. (h)elios = sun; chrysos = gold; referring to the bright yellow flowerheads of many of the flowers of species in this genus.

Tufted, white-woolly perennial to 80 cm from a woody rootstock. Leaves mostly radical, oblaceolate, clasping, roughly hairy and c. grey-woolly. Flower heads disciform, 1--6 at the branch tips, large, depressed-globose, yellow, occ. white, 15--25 mm diam., florets c. 300--1860, ovary glabrous. July--Dec. Grassland, SE (Humansdorp to Gauteng).
