Etymology of Maytenus:
From the Chilean vernacular name maitén or mayten, derived from the Mapuche Indian name mantun, the local name for the species. The Mapuche are one of three surviving tribes of the ancient Araucanian linguistic group of Indians who lived in Chile and Argentina before the Incas or the Spaniards arrived.

Shrub or small tree to 10 m. Leaves alternate, dark green and glossy above, paler beneath, ovate to lanceolate, toothed, with silky threads when broken. Flowers in axillary fascicles, white. Capsules yellow. May--Jan. Forest margins or rocky slopes, NW, SW, KM, LB, SE (Niewoudtville to Cape Peninsula to tropical Africa).
