Etymology of Ocimum:
Gk. okimon = smell, fragrance. The genus contains aromatic herbs such as Basil (O. basilicum).
Etymology of obovatum:
From the Latin ob- = 'in opposite' and ovatus = ‘egg-shaped’; i.e. the narrow side is on the side of the stalk
