Etymology of Putterlickia:
For Aloys Putterlick (1810–1845), Austrian botanist and physician, botanical artist, bryologist. He obtained a PhD in medicine in 1839 based on his thesis Pittosporum, authored Synopsis Pittosporearum (1839) and was a contributor to five other books. He became curator at the Imperial Natural History Museum of Vienna from 1849–1845. While some sources say ‘Dutch’, he was actually born in Jihlava, which is now in the Czech Republic.
Etymology of pyracantha:
From the Greek pyra = 'fire' and acantha = 'thorn'; i.e. a thorn that burns
