Etymology of Schmidtia:
For Johann Anton Schmidt (1823–1905), German botanist and plant collector. He obtained a PhD from the University of Göttingen and lectured at the University of Heidelberg from 1852 to 1863, after which he lived as a private scholar in Hamburg. He collected Bryophyta for the Herbarium Hamburgense between 1846 and 1905 in Bavaria, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Austria, France and Poland. He went on an expedition to the Cape Verde Islands in 1851. He authored Beiträge zur Flora der Cap Verdischen Inseln (Contribution to the Flora of the Cape Verde Islands) (1852), Flora von Heidelberg (1857), and Anleitung zur Kenntniss der natürlichen Familien der Phanerogamen (Instructions to the Knowledge of the Nature Family Phanerogams) (1866, 1870).
