Short etymology:
Gk. sonchos = an ancient name for a kind of thistle. ‘Sow thistle’, sometimes incorrectly called ‘milk thistle’, which belong to the genus Silybum. This genus exudes a milky latex when the plant is cut or damaged. As a result, this thistle was fed to lactating pigs (sows) in the belief that milk production would increase.
