Bacterial nodules of Pavetta gardeniifolia

Summary edit

Description
English: Bacterial nodules in a leaf of a Christmas bride's bush (Pavetta gardeniifolia subsp. gardeniifolia) at Crocodile River Reserve, Gauteng. The leaf is seen from below while held up against the sun, and the nodules show up as scattered dark flecks. The nodules contain a species specific bacterium (Burkholderia sp.).
The shrub was growing in undergrowth of a bush clump, with Karee (Searsia lancea) forming the canopy, in otherwise open grassland. This subspecies has glabrous leaves, and can be identified thereby. This Pavetta species does not have domatia like some near relatives, nor any pellucid gland dots that secrete volatile oils. Observed during an outing of the Tree Society of South Africa.
