Former Attorney General Azima Shakoor has decided to run for the seat of Male' Mayor in January's bi-election. She will be running on a ticket from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC).
Azima released a statement announcing her intentions to run, in which she says that she wishes to lead the necessary numerous efforts to bring true development to Male' area.
Azima noted that while the the administration is now decentralized, there has been no change to the needs of the people, emphasizing the need to further strengthen the administrative framework.
"It would be most beneficial to the development of the Greater Male' Area, and to the country, if an appropriate, honest Maldivian is raised as Mayor to develop Male' as the capital of the country in it's true sense," the statement reads.
Azima assured that she will enforce the strategic plan compiled by now mayor and President Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu, and that she would work strategically to solve the major issues currently faced in Male'.
The bi-election for the mayoral seat is being held due to the post becoming vacant after the current mayor Muizzu won September's presidential election. Muizzu is effectively on leave from his mayoral duties until he is sworn in as President on November 17.
Youth and Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof and former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed have also announced their candidacies in the mayoral election.
