In India leaves are used as vegetable only by local people, but dandelion leaves are sold in big stores of California and relished by residents.

Herb for ID-PC-06-31.07.2015 : 4 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (3) the first two look like dandelion, the third may be frm family hahnenfuß. Dandelions are already out. Warm winters this season is causing several wild flowers to bloom before their natural flowering time. I brought a flower/leaf home yesterday to make close up photographs to show individual florets.

One of my friend identified this as Launea procumbens. Is the id correct? The plant is small shrub, Seen near sea shores. Here in Geelong where I stay is very near shore. I have seen these plants in India too. The reason she gave was Leaves are pinnatisect almost pinnatipartite efi page on Launaea procumbens with images I feel first picture is different from others. Pl. check. No Sir. They are of same flowers. The only thing when I clicked first the blooms were all surrounded by grass. latter I got an isolated plant which I clicked mainly for leaves. These were abundant in summer what you say may be correct.

The leaves as well as the pattern of pappus on dry seed appear to be different. In that case do I separate the images newly sent as a separate mail? Better for record and id? I had earlier thought it to be Taraxacum officinale, however, as an afterthought, I think it is not I think you are right in calling it Taraxacum officinale. The flower-head does look like dandelion. The leaves are of a different plant.

Fruits & Vegetables Week: Taraxacum officinale, the common dandelion: -I have seen this plant frowing as weed around vancouver – I have seen these plant on the way to Gulmarg. We used to blow on the dried flower heads to see the -This was a a regular pastime in our childhood. We would hold the achene head carefully so that it remains instact, then ask the friend whether he wants a turban or a cap. If he would ask for a turban we would blow it gently so that only a few achenes fall out and the heads has many achenes forming a turban. If the friend asked for a cap, we would blow it strongly so that all achenes fall off and cap like naked head is visible.

Flowers from Uttarakhand-ID requested_DS11052011_SN5: Taraxacum officinale is a vasty weed here in North America Garden variety dandelion… now considered troublesome weed by most homemakers, the seeds were originally carried by the european lady ancestors of these same modern day homemakers, to be planted around their homesteading huts, as a supplemental green ..especially .. a salad green, and they knew that its roots are a lever detoxification herb par excel-lance.. and the leaves are now grown in California health conscious farms and sold across the country in green groceries… as salad or even bitter leaf vegetable to be boiled , salted eaten with toast and soup…. and dandelion rootsw are sold in some NYC green herbs stores… I personally love the taste in a salad of very tendre leaves, when the edges are still soft and roundish, before the dentation appears, esp if it comes from a non-poisoned lawn…. They are sold (leaves) in all major stores in California. The plant is very common in Kashmir, where we used to (in our childhood) harvest Rosettes of Taraxacum (along with Capsella bursa pastoris–shephered’s purse; Cichorium intybus-chicory; Nasturtium officinale; etc) and cook as prize vegetable mix.

If a few remain you have failed in your game and visa versa.

but people who really know their plants, health and food, love ’em…
its naturalized from home gardens grown by pioneer immigrant ladies who brought the seeds over from europe and then proceeded to migrate westward in their wagon trains, and they planted these in their gardens,, all along their trails good salad and green cooked vegetable, then and now… comes up everywhere in USA in all lawns no matter how much one wants to remove them… their seed heads can be much fun to watch as a slight breeze makes them sail away… used to be photography challenge in the 70s when strobe like lights were not household word… now every tom dick and harry can take fantastic pictures with a little patience to find the mature seed heads, search google and you’ll find them… its Dandelion…Taraxacum officinale if you pay attention next time you are in usa you’ll find dandelion greens ..grown commercially in large bundles in upscale supermarkets, and organic stores use like spinach good source of many vital nutrients dandelion roots are a herbal medicine for liver. well… phew too much writing

if you want to try this … if there are many many of these seedheads around get some black background or dark background behind one of the deed head set you camera on a tripod or one of those gorrilla gizmos, to get closer to the ground set shutter to 1/60 th sec or so (experiment// several speeds )
lightly blow on the deed head from the left while you release the shutter you’ll get your star pictures… I have tried with hair dryer to blow air but that’s too fast. and haphazard dispersal. strong lungs is a better option google images for a search “dandelion fruits flying” will show you what to expect … and may be make you impatient to try it out.. One of our favourite chilhood pastime. The plant is very common in Kashmir. In addition to harvesting leaf rosettes for vegetable (In California markets they are sold in stores) we used to play with fruit heads Topi vs turban. By holding a full head in hand we would ask another child to choose (if his choice results he/she wins, otherwise I win). If other person opts for turban, we would blow heavily on head to dislodge all fruits, if she/he opts for cap we would blow partially to dislodge only a few fruits so that it looks like a turban. How were the leaves used as a vegetable? Cooked or raw in a salad? We used to cook it as a vegetable along with leaf rosettes of Cichorium and Capsella Wonderful story …
yes even some green grocers carry the dandelion and parsley roots.. good for the liver and kideny, eaten in soups., they tend to be a bit bitterish. Not as affective or prized as Burdock roots, still these are readily available and eaten.

but what we get in green groceries in the usa are big often as big as 10 to 12 inches long wash cut up and saute quickly like you would bok choy or very tender mustard green shoots add some garlic to oil sometimes thai cooking adds salt and black pepper too… I wish we would develop a horticulture fashion of sorts to plant and sell dandelion leaves in india, it has more calcium then milk, more iron than spinach oz per ounce, and list is long … ASHWINI could you collect several hundred seeds, now?? if you do, dry in a cup with fabric over it for 3 or 4 days in a cool place and then put in a thick envelope and in side a folded aluminium foil cover … not plastic bags… Dandelion was brought to usa by migrating housewives and they planted the seeds around their homesteads where ever they stopped for a season or two on their way to the golden california that’s how an eurasian plant got to usa and now people consider it a bad weed and pseudo – beauty minded folks have poisoned the land and the aquifer with strong/stronger weed killers… enjoy them while you have them Thank you … I am going to give it a try and report back. I will try and do so tomorrow. Shall I just collect the whole wispy heads or break them by blowing on them first? if you blow on them they’ll fly and you’ll never catch them
blow for photos of the “stars” but to collect seeds break the seed head, preferably carrying a large envelope with its mouth wide open, bend the head’s stalk in to the envelope and break/cut it off, let it fall into the envelope, then the fallen seeds would be in your envelope, bring the seed heads in, and let them dry whole, the little pappus will fall off slowly and not fly off, then store as above
