Datura Ferox Fierce Long Spined Thorn Apple Seeds

Packet of 40+ poisonous home grown seeds!

This is another interesting Datura species and just like all the others it is strictly ornamental, very poisonous and not a food, and it can be weedy if you don’t keep an eye on it.

It produces beautiful white flowers and looks very similar to Datura stramonium.
It also hybridizes with it very easily and crossing it with my other Datura to see what they produce was the main motivation for adding this fella to my collection.

Now that I do have it I have noticed it makes a very effective trap crop attracting all the beetles from my nearby Solanum and Physalis.

Unfortunately it means this guy is constantly defoliated and looks very sad indeed, but it also means much less insect issues with surrounding edible species.

Another thing I have noticed is that most of the beetles that do eat this Datura, end up sitting around lethargic and I strongly believe it messes with their ability to reproduce.

Flea beetles for example, a real bane of eggplant are drawn from my nearby eggplants to this guy.
They hop over and eat a heap of leaves, but after that they just sit there and they don’t hop away like they normally would when I try to squish them.

My guess is they are stoned or poisoned and despite being covered in them, they never eat enough to actually kill the Datura.

It still manages to flower and set seeds and I grow them in pots and move them around where they are needed.
I use cheap 9lt buckets with a hole in the bottom as pots and the handle makes moving them around where needed a real breeze.

Like the other Datura species I grow these guys are very toxic and here I use them to keep the roos and wallabies away and protect nearby plants.
They have a strong toxic repellent odor, but as a bonus these ones in particular also attract and mess with the leaf eating insects too.
A very unexpected and handy surprise!

Grown by me and the Mrs organically, no chems, no nasties, no problems!!!
