Kaempferia rotunda ‘Asian Crocus’ ‘Resurrection Ginger ‘
This was the original spring blooming Kaempferia species. This is our standard cultivar though we are propagating many new and exciting selections. Unlike many summer blooming Peacock Gingers, Kaempferia rotunda has a much more upright habit, often growing to 2 feet or more. The foliage is silver striped and adds season long appeal. This foliage is the main attraction, but it late spring a mass of beautiful orchid like white and purple flowers make quite a showing. As the flowering finishes, the foliage begins to sprout. It is one of the standard gingers I recommend for the Southern shade garden, being both very cold hardy and reliable. Seeing a ring of these around an Oak tree will make one get rid of all of those ugly Cast Iron Plants and go with a good looking plant. Grows 2-3 feet in shade. Hardy in Zone 8 and above.
This is a standard type for the species. We have many new forms of the Kaempferia rotunda complex with exciting leaf patterns and colors. These are usually a bit slower growing but will have them available in the future.
