MOTHERLAND Saving our seed heritage

For the past 10 years or so, we’ve often found ourselves disheartened to discover that our only seed source of a favorite variety has decided to stop offering it. As plants go out of style or are bred to be much more dwarf in habit (the better to fit on delivery trucks), this scenario is happening more and more often. Sadly, we’re not able to predict which varieties will get the axe – this year or next. Finally, this past year with your ongoing support, we were fortunate enough to be able to add on a new section to our nursery – what we affectionately call “Motherland”. Filled with large seed mothers of varieties we would be heartbroken to see vanish, we’re hoping to prevent the possible extinction of some of our most beloved rare treasures and cottage heirlooms. We dream of being able to keep more than a few of these seed strains alive, so we can continue offering them to our gardening friends, now and in the future. So BIG THANKS everyone! We really couldn’t have done it without you! If this is the first time seeing one of our catalogs, do know that this is THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG, a tiny sampling of more than 2,000 varieties we currently grow. Discover all the rest, plus useful tips and

Viola ‘Frizzle Sizzle Blue’ Positively profuse bloom, super ruffly flowers plus richest lavender and purple coloration with exquisite veining makes this our most popular pansy. Incredible in a container, with its tidy, compact, 9” x 10” habit, it smothers itself in big, 2.5”, curly-swirly blooms. Remaining compact – it’ll bloom for months, and if you snip spent blooms you keep getting more. Sensational in little vases or put them on your salad or drinks – they’re edible! Can be overwintered in our mild climate. Rich soil. Sun/Part shade. Avg. water. Annual. All zones. #2320 $4.95

We offer well-established plants in fat, 4” square pots. Our plants are removed from their pots, wrapped in moist material and bagged. They are then placed back in their pots and secured by our custom inserts. We prefer our larger size to the long, thin containers commonly

videos and lovely slideshows of our gardens on our website. While you’re there, sign up for our fun and droolworthy emails. If you’ve never ordered from us, we’d like you to know we grow our plants the old fashioned way, mostly from seed, in the wind, rain and sun, so they are hardened off when they arrive at your door. We DO NOT use growth regulating hormones (so common with large scale growers) which extend shelf life but often lead to disappointing results in your garden. Our plants arrive with a nice, chubby root ball and healthy foliage carefully packed in a 4” pot. Now, time to sit back, put on your fuzzy slippers and savor another season of garden inspiration!

Viola ‘Whopping Purple Whiskers’ Whoa! Generally we’re not enthralled by giant flowers on short plants, and that was the case until we tried these phenomenal “cat-faced” Pansies. HUGE, 2.5” across, intensely whiskered blooms of velvety purple and white caused us quickly to forget our bias! Free flowering over a long period (deadheading extends it even more) on a compact form, 9” tall x 10” across. Wonderful in pots and purr-fect for the kiddies! Rich soil for amazing show! Edible! Sun. Avg. water. Annual. Available in March. #4224 $4.95

used by mailorder nurseries. Those slimmer pots conserve nursery space and reduce shipping costs but may result in slower plant recovery and growth after transplanting. With a more natural, spreading root pattern, our plants will thrive and delight you with their high success rate!

Digiplexis ‘Illumination Flame’ NEW! THE big, new, exciting introduction to the gardening world this year will knock your socks off! This PERENNIAL “Foxglove” has thrilled us to no end in our first trial, and, in fact, won “Best in Show” at the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show. A fascinating hybrid 6 years in the making (thought to be impossible) by Charles Valin, it’s a cross between common garden foxglove Digitalis purpurea and its perennial Canary Island cousin Isoplexis canariensis. As a sterile hybrid, it doesn’t make any seed and instead puts all its energy into blooming continuously from Spring thru Fall! And even though sterile, it still attracts butterflies and bees. Multiple, magnificent, huge, non-stop, 3’ tall bloom spikes hold rich Fuschia-pink blooms that face graciously outwards, the better to show off those spotted golden throats. A bit tropicalesque in color and feel, they’re fantastically staged above the dark, rich green foliar mound to 24” across. Easy to grow, do give it good, loamy soil with compost added to see what it can do! AND it’s adaptable to full sun thru bright shade – just think of the possibilities! A ferny or dark foliaged companion would be swell. You get both with long lived black Chervil – Anthriscus sylvestris ‘Raven’s Wing’ (online) or black foliaged Angelica stricta ‘Purpurea’ (p. 51). With its endless blooming, it makes a terrific choice for a large pot at least 20” x 20”. Sun/Bright shade. Avg water. Perennial USDA zones 8-10. #4167 $9.95

NEW! Fuchsia ‘Galfrey Lye’ Luminous, eye-catching blooms suspended from amazingly long, slender stems makes this one of my favorite Fuchsias! And it’s GALL MITE RESISTANT! Fast growing into a graceful 4’ x 3’ shrub with arching, wine-red stems, it blooms year around in our mild climate and starts flowering early in USDA zone 8. An abundant bloomer, the lovable 3” “fairy-lantern” flowers display white-blushed-pink tubes and sepals encircling smoky carmine petals, the color contrast making them noticeable even from a distance. Best in rich soil with an annual Spring sidedress of compost. Evergreen (in zone 9-11) and choice for lighting up a partially shady corner. Can be cut back to 2’ tall anytime to refresh, it bounces back fast. Hummers! Bred by Dr. Peter Baye. AM Sun/Bright shade. Avg. water. Shrub USDA zones 8-11. #4091 $9.95

Fuchsia ‘Mendonoma Belle’ Highly recommended by Janis and Rodney Bergquist of the American Fuchsia Society, this is another completely GALL MITE RESISTANT Fuchsia bred by mite-resistant master breeder Peter Baye. A big, bushy and vigorous landscape shrub, 6’ tall and 4’ across, it’s a low maintenance beauty and an exuberant year around bloomer in lowfrost climates and Spring thru Fall where it’s chillier. Particularly showy against deep green foliage, the handsome and plentiful, vividly colored carmine and deep purple 2” blooms bring a hummingbird invasion! Can be pruned as a hedge or to contain growth. Evergreen in USDA zones 9-11. Rich, well drained soil for top-of-the-line appearance. Sun (coastal)/Part shade. Avg. water. Shrub USDA zones 7b-11. #4193 $8.95

Iochroma cyanea “Blue Trumpet Flower” EASY and practically everblooming, this fast-growing relative of Brugmansia makes an excellent choice for partly shady side yards, back of the garden or draping blooms over a fence. Quickly ascending to a multi-stalked 8’ tall x 5’ across (prune for height and width or even maintain as a shrub), it’s loaded Spring to Fall with yummy purple trumpets – up to 20 per cluster! In frost-free climates you’ll get year around bloom and hummingbirds! Rich soil with compost added. Prune anytime to 3’ tall to refresh. Once a week soaking works fine once established. Deer resistant! Part shade/Bright shade. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 8-11. #4100 $8.95

SPRING ... Swing into

Dianthus plumarius ‘Thea Mary’ TOTALLY EXCLUSIVE! Named after my beloved aunt, this is my favorite selection of long-lived, old fashioned and deliciously scented D. plumarius. So charming and cheerful (and easy!) you get a mad burst of bloom in Spring with a multitude of 2”, cherryeyed, single, pink blossoms on 6-8” stems. Cutting spent flowers will greatly prolong bloom time. Cut back foliage to 3” in Summer for a second flowering. In Fall, cut back again for perfect appearance next Spring. Dianthus love drainage, so do plant on the edge of the bed or in a container (5+ gal) and delight them with a 1” side-dress of compost in Spring and Summer and watch what happens! Drought tolerant, deer and snail resistant! Sun/Bright shade. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 5-11. #1098 $7.95

Lupinus regalis ‘Gallery Yellow’ Everyone loves Lupines, but those glorious story-book Lupines we see in gardening magazines fail to thrive here in our mild-climate (and foggy!) coastal California. And so we adore the Gallery Series of Lupines, with their robust flowering habit (photo shows one plant) - dense, elegant bloom spikes to 3’ tall, compact habit to 3’ across, handsome palmate foliage and good mildew resistance. And they’ll return each Spring for at least 3-4 years. Do plant in rich, well-drained soil. Cut spent spikes to keep new ones coming and cut back in Winter (or anytime) to refresh. How to have a

Fabby Garden Look at poor Theda Bara here - she’s so sad and frustrated. Theda was SO excited to start her new garden last Spring that she ran out to the nursery and bought a ton of amazing plants, and planted them before she amended that hard-pan clay soil she’s lying on there. Don’t worry, Theda - we’ve all done it! We’ve even tried to delude ourselves that the number one rule in gardening: “make your soil friable” doesn’t apply to natives, and gone and planted all-native gardens. “Nobody is amending the soil out in nature and look how well it does!”

Actually, native soil is probably very different from the hard-pan clay around your house. Bulldozers and trucks smashed your native soil while your house was being built, squeezing all the air spaces out. So now the roots of your plants have to work extra hard to move outwards into the soil, which cripples nutrient uptake and prevents water from draining, leading to root rot and other problems. The good news: Clay soil is easily fixed, and you can have fabulous, well-draining soil in just a couple of years, with not too much extra work. (See our blog for more details!) More good news - there are lots of plants that are easily adaptable to clay, which means they’ll do well in “clayish” soil with some organic matter floating around below the surface, so the soil has some draining ability. If you can’t resist the siren call of a beautiful garden before you’ve completely improved your soil’s friability, here are a few excellent tried and true “clayish tolerant” planting suggestions that won’t leave you feeling dismayed. If you can add

Continued ... a bit of compost - or even better, some gravel or lava rock - to the good-sized hole you plant them in, you’ll do just fine! This doesn’t mean: “Go ahead and plant in hardpan cement,” like the stuff alongside your driveway (which requires a pick-axe). It means they are adaptable to “clayish” soil,

Euphorbia characias ‘Dwarf’ I love this dwarf form of Euphorbia characias! To 2.5’ x 3’, it’s half the size of the species and just the right size for any garden. Gift Certificates What makes a better present for your gardening pals than a guilt-free shopping blowout in any amount you choose?! Good at the nursery, online & thru the catalog. Four styles to choose from! $Your Choice Lilium lancifolium “Tiger Lily”’ Spectacular towering over the garden in mid-late Summer, this hardy heirloom “pass-along” lily is INDESTRUCTIBLE in the garden, tolerating neglect and poor soil. Within a few years, it makes a grand display of 5-10 strong, 6’ stalks topped with a huge candelabra of radiant, 5”, reflexed orange blooms ornamented with black spots – 12-20 blooms per candelabra! One of the few lilies to produce conspicuous bulbils (baby bulbs) in the leaf axils, you can pop these off for sharing; they’ll easily sprout new plants! An incredible performer and attention hound at the back of a mixed bed, in a rock garden or even front and center in your Summer display, it’s probably the EASIEST lily you can grow. Now, there can be a tradeoff to all this vigor: it’s recommended you keep them separated from Oriental and Asian Lilies, as they may carry a virus that can affect more delicate Lilies. Rich soil for optimum performance. Cut back after bloom. Butterflies and wondrous cut flowers! Sun/Part sun (hotter areas). Avg./Low water once established. Bulb USDA zones 4-9.May ship dormant until April. #2689 $8.95

NEW! Dianthus ‘Elizabethan Pink’ Scentsational! I love this new-for-us, old fashioned and surprisingly large flowered Dianthus! Delphinium belladonna ‘Bellamosum’ I use the belladonna Delphiniums in my Spring and Summer gardens (sky blue Delphinium ‘Cliveden Beauty’, online) because they are ultra blue, easy, quick to bloom, they keep re-blooming till Fall and they overwinter well. Good mildew resistance, too! To 3’ tall and nicely multi-branching, they don’t need staking. When the flowers are spent, just cut back to 3” tall, add a little compost and they’ll be back in action! Deer resistant! Sun. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 3-10. #323 $7.95

Dianthus plumarius ‘Rose de Mai’ Very possibly the showiest of all the Dianthus we grow! ‘Rose de Mai’ quickly spreads to a dense, blue-grey, weed-suppressing mat 3’ around. In early Spring, it bursts into an amazing display of hundreds of double, soft pink, deliciously clove-scented 2” blooms, continuing for a month or two. We cut ours back a bit after blooming and side dress with compost for another round of bloom. Cut back again in Fall. Ideal for draping over the edge of a bed, well-drained soil is best. Cut flowers! Deppea splendens RARE & EXCLUSIVE! The holy grail for frost free gardeners! Believed to be extinct in the wild, this cloud forest treasure was collected in 1981 in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico by Dr. Dennis Breedlove, curator of the CA Academy of Sciences. Dr. Breedlove returned to Chiapas in 1986 to find the area had been cleared for farmland and the Deppeas had vanished. Our plants are clones grown from the original seed distributed to the San Francisco Botanical Garden, where it thrives. Multi-branching to 8’ x 5’, it blooms mid-late Summer thru Fall, bearing clusters of pendulant, golden yellow, tubular flowers topped by violet-red calyces that hang from impossibly thin, wiry stems. Tolerant of only a tiny bit of frost (do protect it) and adverse to heat, it’s best grown along the coast in rich, well drained soil. Filtered sun/Bright shade. Avg. water/ Moist. Perennial USDA zone 10. #2209 $16.95
