Coccothrinax Crinita (Old Man Palm)

A potted Coccothrinax Crinita (Old Man Palm) with green, circular, pinnate leaves and a trunk draped in long, straw-like strands

Recognized by the dense coat of long, beard-like fibers covering its slim trunk, Coccothrinax Crinita (Old Man Palm) is a rare, exotic palm tree originally from Cuba that can reach heights of up to 33 feet tall. However, don’t expect quick results; it is slow-growing and will take a good 10 years to grow a mere five feet tall.

Circular, fan-shaped leaves with split tips grow directly out of its trunk in a spiral motion. During the summer months, stalks crowned with yellow flowers intersperse themselves among leaves ranging in color from bright green to dull gray.

Coccothrinax Crinita (Old Man Palm) Growing Tips*

Coccothrinax Crinite (Old Man Palm) grows best in partial sun light when young. As it matures, it can tolerate full sunlight. With that in mind, follow these basic palm-tree growing tips to ensure your Old Man Palm has a long and healthy life.

  • Situate the palm tree in low-traffic areas to avoid being brushed against too often. This weakens the leaves.
  • Repot when the palm becomes completely pot-bound. This will slow down its growth if you want your palm tree to remain indoors for as long as possible.
  • Consider transplanting tall-growing palms outside to allow them to reach their full height. Allocate up to 50 feet of space out from the trunk for the root system to spread.
  • Plant in well-draining soil; soggy soil encourages fungus growth. For potted palm trees, an all-purpose potting soil works well. Thoroughly loosen the soil where you intend to plant outdoor palm trees, removing weeds and rocks to ensure good drainage.
  • Allow the soil to completely dry out between watering, but don’t let it remain dry for too long.
  • For potted plants, use a fertilizer designed specifically for palm trees. Have your landscape soil tested to determine what nutrients, if any, it needs to ensure the best growing environment for your Coccothrinax Crinita (Old Man Palm).
