  • Deciduous tree, 40-50 ft (12-15 m), rounded outline; bark smooth, gray.  Leaves opposite, pinnate compound, 5-9 leaflets, each leaflet 5-10 cm long and 2-4.5 cm wide.  Flowers white, fragrant, appear with or after leaves, in dense, "string-like", terminal clusters (panicles)7-12 cm long, one of the few ashes with calyx and corolla.  Fruit narrow-oblong, 2-2.5 cm long, clusters (unattractive) may hang on until late winter.
