Summary
The African genus Schistostephium Less. (Compositae: Anthemideae) is revised; eight species are recognised. A key to the species is provided, together with descriptions and illustrations. Conservation assessments have been carried out for each species. Six names are lectotypified: Tanacetum crataegifolium DC., Schistostephium saxicola Hutch. and Schistostephium villosum Hutch. (here all regarded as synonyms of Schistostephium crataegifolium (DC.) Fenzl ex Harv.), Schistostephium dactyliferum Hutch. (treated here as a synonym of Schistostephium heptalobum Oliv. & Hiern), Tanacetum argyraeum DC. (treated here as a synonym of Schistostephium flabelliforme Less.) and Schistostephium oxylobum S. Moore.

Notes
For brevity in this key a distribution indication of ‘South Africa’ refers to South Africa and Swaziland.
Collection numbers and other specimen information cited in square brackets have been obtained from specimens and the G-DC microfiche. Current country names have been inserted for ease of use.
I have not been able to discover the location of three syntypes of Schistotephium saxicola Hutch.: Conrath 402, Rehmann 6082 and Medley Wood 475.
The author has not been able to find out any further information regarding this type specimen.
