Part of the book series: Sustainability in Plant and Crop Protection ((SUPP,volume 18))

Abstract

Root-knot disease of rice caused by Meloidogyne graminicola is an emerging problem in rice farming, in all the rice-growing areas of the world. Previously, M. graminicola was only seen in upland rice, but it has rapidly expanded to irrigated and deep-water rice in the last 15–20 years. In contrast to other Meloidogyne species, M. graminicola develops hook-shaped or spiral root galls at the terminal end of lateral root systems. The nematode causes damage to the rice crop in both nursery and main field, resulting in severe production losses, putting food security at risk. Chemical pesticides are most frequently used by growers to manage this nematode in rice. However, besides their adverse and harmful impact, pesticides often prove non-economic under the rice ecosystem. Organic management approaches such as host resistance, especially the use of resistant cultivars, botanical pesticides, use of organic matters (organic amendments with oil cakes, manures/composts, essential oils, biofumigation) and integrated disease management are good alternatives to chemical pesticides, and can deliver safe management of rice root-knot nematodes.
