Abstract

Ethiopia is endowed with heterogeneous landscapes. The diverse topography has a great impact on the spatial rainfall and temperature variability across the country. In this diverse topography, about 14 floristic regions are recognized in Ethiopia. A synthesis analysis of the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea revealed that there are above 5757 higher plants of which about 10% are endemic. The endemic plants reported from the flora area comprise 17 and 10% of the endemic and near-endemic species richness of the Horn of Africa. However, several new species to the flora of Ethiopia have been published after the completion of the flora project. Thus, the ongoing recording of new species elucidates that the number of plants reported in the flora of Ethiopia is by no means complete. Future protected areas need to represent the full variety of habitat types, species assemblages, ecological processes, or other natural features that are characteristic of a given region. In Ethiopia, protected areas are fairly representative though the lowlands are poorly represented. However, the irreplaceability and vulnerability criteria had been poorly considered during the establishment of the most protected areas.
