Vegetation of Yakutia: Elements of Ecology and Plant Sociology

Abstract

The distribution of the modern Yakutian vegetation cover results from the complex effect of various factors: modern physiographic conditions, complicated natural processes during the Quaternary, presence of bedrocks of various geological ages, other ecological factors and anthropogenic activity. Together this makes the vegetation cover very heterogeneous with pronounced latitudinal and longitudinal differences. Since 40% of the territory represents highlands, the vegetation of this region also shows altitudinal zonation. The general appearance of the modern vegetation of Yakutia started to become established during the periods of the Kazan (Riss-Würm) Interglacial and Sartan Glacial. The vegetation of Yakutia is represented by arctic (26%) and boreal (74%) vegetation. The arctic vegetation covers the ecosystems of coastlines, arctic and subarctic tundra. Forests completely dominate in the boreal zone: in the near-tundra, northern taiga, middle taiga subzones as well as in mountainous landscapes. The Yakutian vegetation also contains azonal types: steppes, petrophytic vegetation, communities of sandy and saline landscapes, meadows, bogs, riparian vegetation as well as the complexes of river valleys.
