Part of the book series: Geobotany ((GEOB,volume 2))

Abstract

East Africa, for the purposes of this chapter, includes the countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Within this area the wide range of altitudes, from sea level on the Indian Ocean Coast to 5895 mat the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, leads to a correspondingly wide range of climatic conditions which allow a great variety of crops, both tropical and temperate, to be grown. Thus wheat, barley, oats and pyrethrum are best grown at over 1800 m while coconuts and cashew nuts are mostly confined to the coastal strip.
