The Heirloom Pentas can last and bloom for years. While this is not native to Florida, it gets a 5 out of 5 rating for nectar for pollinators.  One of the few non-native nectar plants we will sell for that reason. Most pentas have been hybridized for size and color, reducing their nectar value and they are typically annual plants in the gardens as a result susceptible to fungus. This perennial evergreen shrub grows to 3-4’ tall.  It blooms best in full sun and will tolerate partial sun.  As you can see in the photograph, it is very popular with butterflies and the flowers are long lasting. Hummingbirds also enjoy the red flowers. Since this is a non-native it will require some fertilizer in spring and fall. For zone 10 (coastal areas in Tampa and Pinellas)  we can plant this plant all year and zone 9 it can be planted in March through October.  It is not known to be invasive.
