꿀풀과의 낙엽활엽소관목으로 잎은 난형으로 마주 달린다. 길이 5~9cm로 가장자리에 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 잎 겨드랑이에서 나오고 청색, 보라색, 흰색이 섞이며 지름은 2cm정도이다. 뿌리에서 많은 줄기를 뻗는다. 과실은 10mm정도이고 검게 익는다.
마편초과에서(클레로덴드룸 미리코이데스 Clerodendrum myricoides) 꿀풀과로 바뀌었다. 나비수국, 나비꽃으로 유통되고 있다.
