A tree which may reach 20 m high, whitish bark on a greenish background;  rugose young branches densely covered of starred hairs; old branches slightly angular and glabrous. The petioles of the leaves are densely covered of  starred hairs. Leaf blade of 10 – 35 cm long and 8 – 30 cm wide is widely cordate at the base.

Several medicinal plants are used in Cameroonian traditional medicine to treat liver diseases, to fight against worms, to treat abdominal pain, stomach ache and malaria.

The wood of Neoboutonia macrocalyx is used in construction.
