Costus Speciosus: A Guide to Growing and Caring for Crepe Ginger

Costus speciosus, also known as Crepe Ginger, is a perennial herb from the Costus family. Other names include “White-head-to-old”, “Old Mother’s Walking Stick”, and “Broad Merchant Land”.

It’s characterized by its short corolla tube, about 1 cm long, and its elliptical petals, which are about 5 cm long and either white or red at the top.

The lip is pure white, trumpet-shaped, and 6.5–9 cm long, with a frilled and toothed end. The stamen is petal-like, about 4.5 cm long, 1.3 cm wide, with short soft hairs on top, white with a yellow base. It flowers from July to September and bears fruit from September to November.
