Plants tough, stoloniferous perennials, forming dense tussocks. Stems to (1.5) 2 m tall, rigid, woody, branching to produce clusters of shoots at the nodes. Panicles narrow, up to 26 cm long. Spikelets 1.5-2 cm long, with 8-16 florets; glumes 6.5-9.5 mm long, coriaceous, acute; lemmas 7.5-8.5 mm long, calluses and rachilla tips bearded with white hairs 3-5 mm long.
Halopyrum mucronatum grows on coastal sands in regions N1-3, C1, and S2-3 of the Flora of Somalia and on other parts of the Indian Ocean from Mozambique to Sri Lanka.
