Plants annual or perennial. Inflorecences panicles with 1-4(-numerous) spikelike branches; branches if few terminal and digitally arranged on the peduncles, if numerous, racemosly attached to an elongated central axis, often hairy. Spikelets laterally compressed, bases cuneate, with 1-5 fertile florets, rachillas terminating in a cluster of sterile lemmas; fertile lemmas rounded or keeled, coriaceous, usually ciliate on the keels and veins, sometimes almost glabrous, awned from below the tips, tips entire or 2-toothed. Caryopses with free pericarps.
Tetrapogon is a genus of about 10 species. They are native to the tropics of both the Old and New World. Five species are known from Somaliland and Somalia. This differs from the number given in the Flora of Somalia to reflect the inclusion of Tetrapogon roxburghiana which was included in Chloris in the Flora.
