Plants herbs or subshrubs, prostrate to scrambling. Leaves entire, usually opposite but sometimes at least some alternate. Inflorescences narrow and spikelike, subcapitate, or wide, open, and paniculate; bracts present; bracteoles in pairs below each flower, in the axils of the bracts. Tepals 5, the outer 2 differing in form and hairs from the inner 2, the middle tepal intermediatee; stamens 5, shortly fused at the base, usually without, sometimes with, small alternating staminodes; ovaries with 1 ovule; styles slender but rather short; stigmas capitate. Fruits irregularly bursting, thin walled capsules.
Psilotrichum includes about 18 species. They are native to tropical Africa and Asia but most abundant in Africa. There are 12 species known from Somaliland and Somalia.
