Plants subshrubs or herbs. Inflorescences thyrselike, open or somewhat so, with recurved flowers; bracts smaller than the leaves; cymes with (1-) 3 flowers; peduncles absent or almost so; bracteoles absent. Calyces 5-lobed; upper lobes large, concave, decurrent along the distal third of the tubes; lateral lobes broad at the base, tips subulate; lower lobes subulate and longer than the lateral lobes; corollas strongly 2-lipped; tubes narrowly to broadly cylindrical; upper lips 3-4-lobed, almost flat; lower lips shallowly boat-shaped; stamens inserted in the distal part of the corolla tubes, directed to or included in the lower corolla lips. Nutlets ovoid to subglobose, minutely bullate, glabrous.
Orthosiphon includes 44 species, many in tropical and southern Africa, some in tropical and subtropical Asia. There are four species in Somaliland and Somalia.
