Plants shrubs or subshrubs. Leaves simple, opposite or in whorls of 3-4; blades often toothed, sometimes entire. Inflorescences terminal and/or axillary cymes or almost spikelike. Calyces campanulate, 4-6 lobes; corollas more or less zygomorphic; corolla tubes basally saccate or cylindrical; corolla lobes more or less unequal, often forming a 2-lipped limb, the upper lip larger and curved, limb asymmetrically globose in bud; stamens inserted on the corolla tubes, long exserted; anthers basifixed; ovaries imperfectly 4-celled, each cell with 1 lateral ovule; styles terminal; stigmas 2-fid with more or less unequal lobes, exserted. Fruits drupes (2-)4-lobed; mesocarp more or less fleshy; endocarps bony, separating into 4 stones of 2 pairs of stones.
Rotheca includes about 35 species. They grow in Africa and southern and southeaster Asia. Four species grow in Somaliland and Somalia.
