Plants annual or perennial. Leaves:ligules composed of a line of hairs. Inflorescences terminal, solitary, spikelike, of successive sessile-pedicellate spikelet pairs, exserted from the uppmost leaf sheaths; internodes and pedicels stoutly linear to subclavate, ciliate. Sessile spikelets usually laterally, rarely dorsally compressed, fitting between the internode and pedicels; calluses obtuse, inserted ito the cocave tops of the interndoes; lower glumes coriaceous, concave or with a median groove, 2-toothed and 2-keeled, the keels scarcely winged, sometimes become dorsal towards the base; lower florets male, with paleas; upper lemmas 2-toothed, awned from between the teeth; awns puberulous to ciliate along the edges of the twists. Pedicellate spikelets large, lanceolate, strongly dorsally compressed, distinctly veined. Caryopses lanceolate-oblong, dorsally compressed, concave on one side.
Sehima includes 5 species. Tehey are native to the Old World Tropics. Two species grow in Somaliland. The Flora of Somalia does not report any records from Somalia.
