M. Thulin (1993) Plectranthus. Flora of Somalia 1: 349-355 WARNING: The description below is of Plectranthus as treated in the Flora of Somalia but more recent research (Paton et al, 2018; see reference page) transfer all of them to other genera, all but one to Coleus and one, Plectranthus flaccidus, to Equilabium. Consequently, this description, modified to exlude species of Equilabium, has been iused to develop a description of Coleus for use in Somaliland and Somalia. The relevant kays have also been modified (2022-07-31). Plants herbs or shrubs. Inflorescences thyrse-like (in species from Somaliland and Somalia), open or dense; bracts smaller and usually clearly differentiated from the leaves, often deciduous; cymes of individual thyrses with 1-many flowers, sometimes distinctly pedunculate; bracteoles absent. Flowers pedicellate; pedicels usually attached to the dorsal part of the calyces; calyces 5-lobed, usually more or less upcurved, sometimes almost rotate, lower lobes usually longer and/or narrower than the lateral lobes, lateral lobes lanceolate or deltoid, upper lobes somewhat enlarge, often decurrent along the lateral part of the tube; corollas usually strongly 2-lipped, tubes usually bent near their base, lower lips boat-shaped, upper lips (3-)-4-lobed, almost flat; stamens attached near the corolla tube mouths and close together, free to unted to beyond midlength, usually becoming as long as the lower corolla lips; anthers 1-celled; style branches equally long. Nutlets subglobose to shortly ellipsoid, glabrous, usually glossy. Plectranthus is a genus now considered to include about 85 species, of which are native from Cameroon to Ethiopia and Southern Africa to Madagascar, the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsular, India, and Sri Lanka. Several species previously included in the genus have been transferred to other genera since the Flora of Somalia was published. The above description currently includes them but will be modified after descriptions of the newly recognised genera have been added to OpenHerbarium. The Flora of Somalia recognizes 26 species as occurring in Somaliland and Somalia and about 300 worldwide. Key to the species of Plectranthus as treated in the Flora of Somalia. Paton, A., M.
