Hagenia abyssinica

A very rare chance to obtain this Afromontane tree species. Collected originally at 3300m alt in the Simian Mts of Ethiopia, this unlikely member of the rose family is related to Polylepis and Acaena and like the former has richly coloured peeling bark. The pinnate Melianthus-like leaves are huge in comparison however. To try in the mildest areas of the British Isles, such as coastal or inner-city heat islands. There is a good young specimen at Tregrehan, Cornwall for example.
