Maximum Size: 6'

Ardisia humilis typically grows to a height of about 12 inches and forms a dense, compact mound of foliage. It has glossy, leathery leaves that are dark green in color and oval-shaped, measuring about 2 to 4 inches long. The leaves are arranged in an alternate fashion along the stems.

Space / Planter Size:

Ardisia humilis is a low-growing shrub with a compact habit, so it generally doesn't require a large amount of space. The size of the space and planter will depend on whether you are growing it indoors or outdoors.

History

Ardisia humilis is often cultivated as a ground cover or as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes due to its low-growing habit and attractive foliage. It is worth noting that while Ardisia humilis can be visually appealing, it is considered invasive in some regions outside its native range.

Plant Care

During the summer months, Ardisia humilis produces small clusters of delicate, white or pale pink flowers that are approximately 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) in diameter. These flowers are followed by small, round berries that change color as they mature, starting from green and turning to shades of pink and finally to deep red or purple. The berries are considered ornamental and can persist on the plant for an extended period.

Water: Moderate

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Ardisia humilis prefers well-draining soil. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Be careful not to over-water or let the plant sit in standing water, as this can lead to root rot.

Sun: Bright, Indirect

Ardisia humilis prefers partial shade to full shade. It thrives in filtered light or areas with indirect sunlight. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
