Selenicereus undatus, commonly known as the dragon fruit cactus or pitaya, is a striking and exotic tropical cactus species that is native to Central America but is now cultivated in various tropical and subtropical regions around the world. This unique and fast-growing cactus is characterized by its long, arching stems with angular, deeply ribbed surfaces and its large, fragrant, and night-blooming flowers. The show-stopping blossoms are typically white, with some varieties featuring pink or yellow variations. These flowers give way to the equally captivating dragon fruit, which is a vibrant and scaly, bright pink or red fruit with white or red flesh speckled with tiny black seeds. The fruit is not only visually appealing but also highly nutritious and rich in antioxidants and vitamins. Selenicereus undatus is an epiphytic or climbing cactus that can be cultivated both in the ground and in containers, making it a popular choice for ornamental landscaping and home gardening. Its unique appearance, delectable fruit, and adaptability make it a sought-after addition to gardens and fruit orchards, introducing a touch of the tropics to a variety of settings. Zones 10-11

Germination

Germinating Selenicereus undatus seeds can be an exciting process. To prepare the seeds for planting, wash them thoroughly to remove any pulp and allow them to air-dry. After drying, plant the seeds in a well-draining cactus mix or a mix of potting soil and perlite. Sow the seeds shallowly, only about 1/8 inch deep, and then water the soil well. Cover the planting container with plastic wrap or a plastic dome to create a greenhouse effect, which helps maintain high humidity. Place the container in a warm, well-lit location, ideally with indirect sunlight. Dragon fruit seeds are sensitive to temperature, so maintaining a consistent, warm environment of around 70-95°F (21-35°C) is crucial. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged throughout the germination process, and be patient, as germination can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into individual containers or the garden, where they will continue growing into unique and tropical cactus plants.
