Origin/Ecology: Native to Japan
Habit: Large, pyramidal, evergreen conifer that grows in the wild to 50-70′ (infrequently to 150′) tall. In cultivation grows to 30′ tall.
Leaves: Fine-textured medium green needles are tinted white beneath.
Leaf Arrangement: Opposite
Flowers and Fruit: Cones are small (1/4″ across), glaucous green during summer before turning black-brown when ripe.
Bark: Reddish brown bark peels in strips.
Water Use, Soil: Average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Avoid wet, poorly-drained soils.
Exposure: Full sun to part shade.
Landscape Uses: Specimen, shrub borders, screen.
Limitations: Juniper blight, root rot, bagworms.
