Information
Loosely tufted perennial; culms 30–90 cm. high, slender, erect or geniculately ascending. Leaf-blades narrowly lanceolate-linear, up to 25 cm. long and 5–12 mm. wide, dark green, pubescent above or glabrous, finely acute; ligule up to 12 mm. long; sheaths retrorsely scabrid or smooth, auricled at the mouth. Panicles 10–25 cm. long, moderately loose, sparingly branched, ± one-sided, nodding. Spikelets linear-lanceolate to narrowly oblong, 16–30 mm. long; glumes linear, the lower 6–10 mm. long, the upper 10–13 mm. long; lemmas narrow and acute in side view, 10–17 mm. long; awns up to 4 cm. long. Hygroscopic coiling of the awns about one another withdraws the barbed callus from the spikelet. It readily adheres to animals and the whole cluster of florets is thus dispersed.
